More than 90 Indian Lake students got their teeth shined up ahead of Halloween, the holiday that’s hardest on teeth.
The mobile dentists of Smile Care Ohio visited Indian Lake Local Schools for three days. Two teams of dentists, dental assistants and x-ray technicians set up in the elementary school guidance room, spending all day examining, cleaning and applying sealant to students’ teeth. Any student in the district could visit the clinic if parents filled out the forms.
The Smile Care Ohio program is offered in schools for any student who has not had his or her teeth cleaned for 6 months.
Parents have the option of paying a reduced rate or applying for grants to receive the service for free. Statistics show on average in Ohio elementary students without dental care missed 2 days of school due to oral health problems.
Students who are identified as having cavities or other dental problems had notes sent home to their parents with information on follow-up care.
