Indian Lake Elementary students put everyday math and reading into practice at the local grocery store Monday evening. Indian Lake Elementary School and the Lakeview Community Market Store teamed up for their second annual Family Fun and Education Night.
Families were able to complete recipe scavenger hunts looking for ingredients and prices, compute costs with a math produce challenge where they weighed different foods and take behind the scenes tours of the store.
Educator Pam Scarpella helps organize quarterly Family Game Nights at ILES. She says this activity is a great field trip for families to have fun at a local business and show students how the skills they learn in the classroom can be put to use in real life.
Students were also able to use their art talents to paint and decorate grocery bags the store will offer to veteran shoppers next week.
Each student who participated got a cookie and those who competed the scavenger hunt got to pick a new book. In addition, several families won prizes and Community Market gift cards. Mary Rutan Healthy Habits representatives were there to talk about nutrition and exercise, while firefighters and EMTs from the Lakeview and Indian Joint Fire Districts set up outside.
