The Ohio Hi-Point Board of Education toured the new Dr. Sloan Smart Technology Center during the March 21 regularly scheduled meeting.
The Dr. Sloan Smart Technology Center, created to address the growing industry needs in the district’s local communities, will house the Applied Manufacturing and Smart Technology Engineering programs starting next fall.
Within the new space, students will work with industry standard equipment to develop the skills and earn the credentials needed to work with autonomous vehicles through a partnership with the Transportation Research Center and The Ohio State University. The program will also provide students the opportunity to gain college credit to area institutions like Clark State Community College.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain a jumpstart on their futures, whether that’s the workforce or college,” said Superintendent Rick Smith. “We’re very proud of this space and look forward to sharing it with students and our community.”
The ribbon cutting ceremony for the Dr. Sloan Smart Technology Center was scheduled for April 4 from to 6:30 p.m.
During the meeting, the board approved employment of Jenna Alig (Bellefontaine) as the High School Supervisors’ Secretary, Camila Elkins (Bellefontaine) as an Allied Health & Nursing instructor, Luke Ahern (Marysville) as the Performing Arts instructor, and Bailey Penhorwood (Powell) as a Supply Chain Management instructor.
Autumn Horton, an Electronics Technology senior from Benjamin Logan High School, and Patrick Trace, a Culinary Arts senior from Graham High School, were recognized as the March Students of the Month.
Joyce Furlong, Attendance Secretary, was recognized as the March Staff Member of the Month.
In other board action:
· Heard the Legislative Report from Paul McMahill
· Approved the action items recommended by the Treasurer including the February 2018 Financial Statement, interest and investments, appropriation modifications, transfers, and advances, and appropriation increases and decreases
· Approved the out-of-state professional development of Stacy Colwell, Assistant Treasurer, to attend AMA 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Workshop in Arlington, VA in September
· Approved extended days and supplemental contracts for approved staff members
· Approved employment of Robert Alig (Bellefontaine) for district vehicle maintenance as needed
· Approved internship agreements with companies presented
· Approved the donation of an HP Designjet 5500 printer from Treehouse Art & Design of Urbana, OH and measuring tools to be used in multiple career technology labs from Honda Transmission Manufacturing of Russells Point, OH
· Approved the attendance of Ashley Thompson (Marysville Satellite Agriculture Education instructor) to attend CASE training at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, PA in June
· Approved the out-of-state study trips for Stefanie Brown (Marysville STEM Satellite Biomedical Sciences instructor) or Cheri McSheffrey (Marysville STEM Allied Health instructor), Tammy Heitmeyer and Megan Elkins (Allied Health & Nursing instructors), Cheryl Hess (Graham Satellite Biomedical Sciences instructor), and Deb Purcell (Kenton Satellite Allied Health & Nursing instructor) to chaperone students at the HOSA National Leadership Conference in Dallas TX in June; Lisa Coburn (Indian Lake Satellite Business instructor), Lindsay Wyan (Riverside Satellite Business instructor), and Mary Trudgeon (Upper Scioto Valley Satellite IT instructor) to chaperone students competing at the BPA National Leadership Conference in Dallas, TX in May; JJ Martin (Marysville and Triad Satellite Supply Chain Management instructor) to chaperone students competing at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta in April; and Shelly Swaney (SkillsUSA Advisor) to chaperone students competing at the National SkillsUSA Leadership Conference in Louisville, KY in June
· Approved cell phone stipend for approved staff members
