Elementary students pass along encouraging words to high schoolers (and furry friends?) with comments such as “Today Is My Day” and “You’re Pawsome.”

Indian Lake High School students are getting a “word wall” of encouragement from elementary kids.

ILHS math educator Amber Shively created the “Take What You Need, Give When You Can” wall just outside her classroom.

Shively says she saw the idea on Pinterest and thought it could make an impact. So she enlisted students in the Lindsey Hollar, Melanie Asman, Elaine Jacobs and JoAnne Brademeyer elementary classrooms to come up with kind or funny notes on post-its. The teachers also added their own words of wisdom.

“It never hurts to have more positive messages around for them,” Shively said. “High school students have a lot to worry about.”

ILHS students are encouraged to grab a note from the wall whenever they are feeling lonely or depressed. Shively would also like them to add their own words of encouragement for someone else when they are having a good day.

The wall is part of a cross-campus effort to support and highlight positive behaviors from all students.
