Indian Lake school bus drivers are making sure their students know the rules of the road. All students in kindergarten through third grad boarded the bus the week of Sept. 14 to review safety procedures. Indian Lake Transportation Director Pat Smith says although some students do not ride the bus to and from school, everybody needs to understand the dos and don’ts in order to travel for a field trip or other event.
During the safety review, the bus drivers work in pairs. They start by making sure students know where it is safe to stand and wait on the bus before it comes. Then they practice waiting for the driver’s signal before crossing the road to enter the bus. Drivers also review basic bus rules such as no standing or moving from seat to seat, no food or drink and keeping hands and items inside the bus at all times, especially while moving. Bus driver Laura Dalton says behavior is normally the biggest bus problem and she reminds students, “If you wouldn’t do it in the classroom, don’t do it on the bus!” The State of Ohio requires every school to conduct annual bus safety reviews during the first few weeks of class.
