After a year living in Germany, Indian Lake senior Spencer Wolf is back and sharing his experience as an exchange student.
Wolf showed pictures and gave details of his year-long adventure to sophomores, juniors and seniors in a recent assembly at the high school.
He explained how he became interested in becoming an exchange student after attending a Bellefontaine Rotary Club Youth Leadership event that included remarks by club member and former exchange student Rick Nelson. A sophomore at the time, Wolf worked with Nelson through the Bellefontaine Rotary Club and the Rotary International Youth Exchange organization to arrange his own exchange in Germany.
During the presentation Wolf wore his signature exchange student jacket covered in pins he traded with exchange students and others he met along the way.
He told Indian Lake students that his experience was incredible,”You should take risks in life because you might end up making a lot more friends you wouldn’t have had otherwise. I gained so much from exchange.”
Spencer spent his entire junior year living in Wolfsburg, Germany, with two different families. He attended high school, shared cultural experiences with his host mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters and made many new friends.
“Although exchange is really meant to be about going to school, another big thing is getting to tour your country and neighboring countries to see the sites,” he said.
On several trips to Great Britain and France with his families, Spencer learned about the language, history and of coarse, food, of European culture. Wolf’s favorite part of the exchange experience was the “Europa Tour” where American exchange students living all over the continent came together to tour several European cities. Spencer says his favorite country on the tour was Italy. Students and Rotary Club members were able to follow some of Wolf’s adventures on his blog that he updated often.
Now back at ILHS, Spencer is on pace to graduate on time. He has resumed playing piccolo with the ILHS Marching Band and was recently inducted into the ILHS National Honor Society. Records indicate Spencer is the first outbound exchange student ever from Indian Lake High School.
