The Hilliker YMCA has opened a Before & After School Child Care program last at Bellefontaine Elementary School. Child Care Coordinator Amber Armbruster reports that seven children are registered in the program (as of Aug. 25). The enrollment trend is projected to continue as more parents become aware of it.
When CEO Mike Mullins came on board at the Hilliker YMCA in January, he quickly learned that the YMCA is one of the nation’s largest child care providers, serving over 700,000 children at over 10,000 locations nationally. After visiting other area YMCA’s he realized that the successful Y’s were those where child care programming was strong. After conducting a needs assessment at the Bellefontaine Elementary School earlier this year, it was determined that a majority of K-2 parents needed a before and after child care option. Mr. Mullins states, “With so many families and children being served across the country and by our YMCA neighbors in Urbana and Sidney, it just seemed like a logical next step in programming for the Hilliker YMCA. And of course an important driving factor in all of this was our desire to fulfill our mission by building healthy spirit, mind and body for Logan County children through Christian principles.”
Mullins added, “Big things are happening at the Hilliker YMCA and I am excited for the future of this organization. I should also add that it would have been difficult to put this program in place without the support of Superintendent Hall and the Bellefontaine Elementary and Intermediate School Principals. We also received very generous financial support from Steve Austin, Joan & Mark Haushalter, and the Bellefontaine Rotary Club, otherwise, we might not have opened in the fall.”
