IL board members visit updated weight room

Athletic Director Jeff Courter shows members of the Indian Lake Board of Education and Superintendent Pat O’Donnell new equipment in the recently updated weight room.

Indian Lake Board of Education members got a workout during their regular monthly meeting on June 18. Athletic Director Jeff Courter led the board on a tour of the updated weight room. He showed off the new weight training stations that student athletes are already using for team workouts this summer. He also pointed out light renovations made to the weight and training rooms, including paint and other facility repairs.

Courter told the board members, “Not only does this weight room renovation improve the strength of our athletes, it’s also much more efficient. We’ve already found that teams are able to cut their weight training time significantly while improving the workout.”

Earlier this year, the Mary Rutan Foundation donated $35,000 to help pay for the weight room project. Student athletes brought in approximately $14,000 through a fundraiser. The remainder of the $51,000 dollars raised came in the form of memorial contributions from the Robert Duane Dye family. Dye passed away unexpectedly in January.

Board members also checked out newly updated LED lighting in the ILHS main gym. The project cost approximately $21,000, but the district will receive rebates from the Logan County Electric Cooperative to cover some of the cost. Maintenance Supervisor Larry Flora reports the updated lighting will pay for itself over the next few years through reduced energy costs. Courter and High School Principal Rob Underwood also discussed with the board the possibility of adding bleachers to the mezzanine area of the main gym and other possible improvements in the future depending on the cost.

Also during the meeting, board members voted to increase lunch prices beginning this fall. District Treasurer Coleen Reprogle explained that an increase is required to be in compliance with the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program. That federal program enables the district to offer free and reduced lunches to qualifying families. Elementary lunches will go up 15-cents to $2.25, Middle School lunches will increase 10-cents to $2.35 and High School lunches will increase 25-cents to $2.75.

Board of education members also hired employees to replace retirees and complete the staff for the upcoming school year including Danielle Even- ILES Secretary; Amanda Fulkerson- ILMS Teacher; Kristen Glink-ILMS Teacher; Fawn Shulz-ILMS Teacher; Amy Lynn Phillips- ILMS Teacher. Ryan Dickson was hired as the Head Wrestling Coach and JoAnne Brademeyer was hired as the Head Volleyball Coach.

Finally, board members voted to enter into an agreement with the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center for the Career Technical Program. Superintendent Pat O’Donnell said this partnership will help revamp the district’s vo-ag and FFA curriculum.

The Indian Lake Board of Education meets again on July 20.
