Area communities are gearing up for Fourth of July activities, although not all will be held on the Fourth.
The village of West Liberty isn’t waiting for the Fourth of July weekend to display fireworks or offer other holiday fare. The weekend of June 26-28 will see several ball teams converge at Lions Park for (Force One) tournament play. This also will be the site on Saturday, June 27, for an 8 a.m. Young Life Memorial Run, an all-day antique car show, a 4 p.m. Lions Club fish fry and, at dusk, the ever-popular fireworks.
Village Police Chief Shane Oelker says the West Liberty Force Fastpitch Softball organization will again play host to the West Liberty Force Fireworks Blow-Up Softball Tournament, as well as being the main sponsor of the annual village fireworks at dusk.
The tournament will begin the afternoon of Friday, June 26, and conclude with Championship games on Sunday, June 28. This tournament will again host over 50 teams from throughout Ohio in the 10u, 12u, 14u, 16u and 18u age groups. Games will be played at the West Liberty Lions Park, Dodge Park and the West Liberty Salem High School.
At dusk or at the completion of the final game June 27, whichever is later, the Force Organization will host the fireworks at Lions Park. These fireworks have grown each year, and this year will be the biggest show yet. These fireworks are made possible by The Force organization as well as several other donations. Donations will be accepted during the day of the show. In case of rain, the fireworks will be held June 28. Concessions will be available at the park the entire weekend and throughout the fireworks.
The schedule for the Memorial Run, in recognition of lives lost too soon, is: 7:30 a.m. – Sky Lantern Prep; 8 a.m. – Sky Lantern Release; 8:15 a.m. – Kiddie Rainbow Dash (ages 2-8 years old); 8:30 a.m. – 2.5 Mile Fun Run/Walk. For registration forms, fee info and more, visit the Facebook page Young Life Memorial Run/Walk and Kiddie Rainbow Dash.
There will be some road closures and parking restrictions the day of the fireworks show, and all closures will be marked.

The Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce is making plans for its usual activity-loaded Beach Spectacular & Fireworks 5K on the Lake. The event is always held on the first Saturday of July. This year that means July 4. All activities will be held at Old Field Beach.
The chamber says thousands travel to the area to see fireworks glowing over the lake (donate to the fireworks fund by calling the chamber at 937-843-5392 or visiting the chamber website). Before dusk and fireworks, however, peruse beloved old vehicles at the Cruise-In. Registration is 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and the grand prize will be awarded at 3 p.m.
Beginning at 11 a.m., check out Indian Lake’s Got Talent, as well as several children’s pageants: Beach Baby Contest, Little Miss, Jr. Miss, Miss Indian Lake, and Mr. Indian Lake Contests), Indian Lake’s Got Talent, and Car Show.
