ZANESFIELD – Kirkmont Back To Basics Day is set for 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Kirkmont Center of Zanefield. Family members of all ages are welcome to Kirkmont’s 278 acres of wooded countryside for a day of back-to-basics interpretation and entertainment.
The day will include guided hikes, self-led hiking and exploring, interpretive presentations, arts-and-crafts, a scavenger hunt and an appearance by Creek Stewart of Willow Haven Outdoors, host of The Weather Channel’s Fat Guys in the Woods and consultant for Backpacker Magazine.
Guides will lead three pairs of interpretive hikes over the course of the day, and in between visitors will have several options of interpretive presentations to attend. These presentations will include: An Interpretive Walk to Kirkmont’s Fen and Bog; The Top 5 Survival Tools Every Hiker Should Carry, and how to use them, presented by Creek Stewart; Birding, presented by the Ohio Ornithological Society; Wild Edibles and Tracking, presented by a Certified Pathfinder Instructor of Dave Canterbury’s Pathfinder Survival School; Photography and Backpacking Basics, presented by a man who has backpacked more than 20 years.
A hearty backyard barbecue lunch will be offered noon to 3 p.m. and bottled water will be available throughout the day. Water stations will be on the guided hike routes.
Each guided hike will be led by two guides who will answer questions and point out interesting facts about the local woodland lore of central Ohio. Talks will include information about the land, the plants, the wildlife and what Kirkmont has to offer.
Participants are encouraged to bring pets. Pets must be leashed at all times, and pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their animals. Pets are not allowed on the Waterfall Trail.
Cameras also are welcome.
Between 1 and 2 p.m. visitors have the option of two crafts and a scavenger hunt to engage children and young adults. Prizes will be offered to the top two teams in the scavenger hunt. The two crafts are a Pinecone Bird Feeder and a Nature Picture Frame, using materials found in the Kirkmont woods.
RSVPs should be sent to Caleb Thompson at Cthompson4137@gmail.com. Subject: Nat’l Trails Day RSVP. If submitting an RSVP for one or both of the crafts, please note Craft A for the Pinecone Birdfeeder, Craft B for the Twig Picture Frame, or BOTH for both crafts. This helps ensure enough supplies for everyone.
While there is no fee to attend the day of activities, a suggested donation of $5 will be requested.
