A team of five Outdoor Careers students at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center placed third in the Ohio Nursery and Landscapers’ Challenge during the Central Environmental Nursery Trade Show (CENTS) in Columbus on Jan. 11.

The team competed against six other career centers in the state to complete a landscape installation from a given blueprint in less than six hours in the middle of the trade show. Installations were judged on safety, industry standards and presentation.

The judging was tough as Ohio Hi-Point’s team narrowly missed second by one-half of a point, and first place by one and one-half points.

Ohio Hi-Point’s team consisted of Tyler Porter (Urbana High School), Aj Sorgen (Kenton High School), Chris Fulmer (Indian Lake High School), Cole Craig (Benjamin Logan High School) and Jacob Gullett (Upper Scioto Valley High School).

Throughout the day, CENTS attendees watched the landscapes unfold, seeing the future of the industry exemplified through skilled high school students.

Industry coach Chad Carpenter from All About Landscaping assisted the team. Cole Carpenter is the Outdoor Careers instructor at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center.
