Indian Lake High School students showed their patriotism during the 7th annual FCCLA Freedom Breakfast and Assembly held recently.

Students gave dozens of local veterans in attendance a standing ovation and went forward at the end to thank them for their military service to the country.

The Future Career and Community Leaders of America group at ILHS hosts the event yearly. Members prepared and served veterans a hearty breakfast in the ILHS Auxiliary Gym, then led them to the auditorium for an all-school program.

This year’s guest speakers included Vietnam Air Force veteran Jim Moorman, who gave students his take on the recent NFL protests.

“I brought up about the oath of office that veterans take and how much that means to veterans as we go forward in our lives. I don’t agree with the protests about kneeling or sitting during the National Anthem, but I would defend that practice to the death because it’s that important. If we lose our freedoms, we lose everything.”

Logan County Vets to DC President Scott Stewart also spoke. He told the crowd that knowing veterans has made him a better person and society should not wait until our soldiers have passed before we honor them.

“We’re really good about building monuments after they’re gone, but we should honor our veterans who are with us every day, ” Stewart remarked.

Indian Lake Senior FCCLA member Samara Jakeway, who accompanied veterans on the most recent Logan County Vets to DC trip in September, helped lead the assembly.

Veterans who attended the event also received gift bags prepared by FCCLA students.
