The Indian Lake Board of Education addressed several important issues during the regular monthly meeting on Monday, Sept. 21.

High School Principal Rob Underwood continued the conversation from August about moving the 2016 graduation date from Memorial Day Weekend. Administrators and board members agreed that Commencement Ceremonies for the Class of 2016 will be Sunday, May 22 at 2 p.m. Underwood said, “After talking at length with students, parents and community members and conducting an evenly split online survey, we believe Sunday, May 22 is the ideal date to hold this year’s commencement.“

Several Indian Lake area businesses had requested the district change graduation ceremonies to avoid the busy holiday that signifies the opening of tourist season. Furthermore, Sunday May 29th is nine days after seniors attend their last day of classes this school year on May 20th. Saturdays in May are not suitable for commencement because of conflicts with scheduled Division II Baseball, Softball and Track and Field District/Regional competitions. There is a real possibility that Indian Lake senior athletes could qualify for these contests, Underwood noted.

In other business, Board President Mark Albright brought up the idea of enacting a random drug testing policy for students involved in extracurricular activities. Albright said the Tyler’s Light presentation at ILHS last spring, concerning a central Ohio football player who died of a heroin overdose, inspired him to seek information. “I think a policy like this could take some of the pressure off our athletes and students. It could give our kids another tool to avoid peer pressure instead of getting mixed up in something they shouldn’t.” Over the next few months, Superintendent Pat O’Donnell plans to talk with other schools about drug testing policies and investigate the cost.

Finally, the board voted unanimously to approve an authorization of sale for the former school site property in Lakeview. Mark Albright, Treasurer Coleen Reprogle and Lakeview officials made the purchase official later in the week.
