Alexandra Bushatz, an Ohio Hi-Point Career Center Cosmetology student from Marysville High School, placed first in the Poetry Out Loud school competition Jan. 26. Grace Hawson (Multimedia Marketing, Riverside High School) and Trent Devine (Multimedia Marketing, Indian Lake High School) placed second and third, respectively.
Bushatz advances to the regional semi-finals on Feb. 20 with a shot to compete at the state and national levels.
For the competition, students selected, studied, memorized a poem. Then, students presented the poem in front of a panel of judges. This year, 28 students participated in the school competition.
The Poetry Out Loud competition is part of a unit lesson taught by Ohio Hi-Point English instructors Monica Young and Ryan Gilbert. This is the second year students participated.
Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.
