Figuring nutrient needs of farmland


Indian Lake FFA/OHP students are investigating what nutrients the school farm needs for maximum yields in the future. They recently spent time soil sampling and testing the entire acreage for the first time in at least 15 years. They pulled samples from points laid out from a GPS grid to look at the minerals and nutrients currently in the soil. IL FFA Instructor Tanner Schoen explains this will provide a blueprint on what and how much fertilizer to spread over the next 4 years. Agronomy and Precision Ag teams from Sunrise Cooperative assisted in the testing and talked with students about other aspects of modern agriculture technology. When the test results are complete, the Sunrise team will return to the classroom and analyze the results with the students to develop a nutrient plan and explain why such a plan is needed.
