Community health and wellness grants awarded

Area agencies and schools received grants from Mary Rutan Foundation totaling nearly $35,000 to assist in the funding of programs and services to improve the health and wellness of Logan County.

The focus of the grant program is to address the areas of need and risk for the residents of our community as identified in the county’s 2015 Health Risk and Needs Assessment. Those areas include obesity, lack of physical activity and opiate and heroin abuse.

“Mary Rutan Foundation is proud to partner with our area schools and organizations in pursuit of a healthier Logan County,” states Mrs. Allison. “We believe that we can be most effective and have the greatest impact through community collaborations and partnerships focused on the areas of concern.”

Twelve area organizations submitted applications totaling $72,523.26 in grant requests. Preference was given to projects that demonstrate impact on one or more priority areas, focused on populations identified as at-risk areas of Logan County, serve a sufficient number of people in Logan County, family and/or caregiver involvement, school based implementation, and those that develop innovative collaborations with other community organizations or agencies.

Of the applications submitted, eight grants were awarded totaling $34,616.00. Recipients and programs include:

Bellefontaine Elementary Happy Feet Obstacle Course $8,781.00

Bellefontaine Middle School Healthy Learning Center $7,900.00

First United Methodist Church Healthy Neighborly Love $4,474.00

Ohio Hi-Point Fraternal Order of Police Community Wellness and Outreach $3,000.00

Mary Rutan Foundation began awarding these grants in 2014. Since then, nearly $185,000 has been invested in community health and wellness initiatives. Several of these programs continue in our community, sustained through new partnerships and funding sources.
