Editor’s note: The following statement concerning suspended superintendent Patrick O’Donnell was issued by the Indian Lake school board following a special meeting Nov. 9.

Robert M. Harrelson, an attorney appointed as Referee by the Ohio Department of Education, issued his “Report and Recommendation” on November 7, 2017, to the Indian Lake Local School District Board of Education (the “Board”) for the next step in the termination of Patrick O’Donnell’s contract of employment. The Referee’s report followed a five-day hearing held on four days in August and on September 11, 2017.

Mr. Harrelson’s recommendation was that Mr. O’Donnell should remain on unpaid suspension until resolution of the criminal proceedings against him.

In this process, Ohio law specifically provides the board of education with the authority to accept or to reject the report and recommendation of a referee. (See Ohio Revised Code Section 3319.16.)

The Board conducted an initial review of the report and recommendation of Mr. Harrelson at the special meeting on November 9th. In order to make a final decision whether to accept or reject the Referee’s recommendation, the Board members must carefully review the recommendation of the Referee.

The next regular meeting of the Board is November 20th.
