Indian Lake Middle School 8th graders had a hands-on government experience when they toured the Ohio Statehouse in downtown Columbus. ILMS Co-Principal Missy Mefford reports they participated in a guided tour, explored both the House and Senate Chambers, learned about all 3 branches of state government and asked a lot of questions.

Mefford says, “The students especially liked the interactive section where they can use the touch screen displays to balance the state budget and see how taking money away from one part of government affects other areas.”

The Statehouse visit is in line with 8th grade social studies curriculum and gives the students a preview of the kinds of important buildings and monuments they will see if they participate in the annual trip to Washington, D.C. in the spring.
