Representatives from the Firefighter Phil Program urged Indian Lake Elementary students to know multiple escape routes from home and school during National Fire Prevention Month.
“Magic” Tom Rozoff and his puppet friends from Firefighter Phil talked with students in grades kindergarten through fourth at Indian Lake Elementary School about many fire safety strategies.
The theme of this year’s program is “Every Second Counts-Know 2 Ways Out!”
Firefighters from the Huntsville, Lakeview and Indian Joint Fire Departments joined students in playing a game called “Harmful or Helpful?” Students had to decide whether household items and practical advice might be helpful or harmful when it comes to fire prevention, safety and escape.
“Magic” Tom told students in case of a fire:
1) Stay calm
2) Stay low and go – crawl on the floor where the air is easier to breathe
3) Feel the door – use the back of your hand to determine if fire is on the other side
4) Get out and stay out- DO NOT re-enter a burning building
5) Call 911 from outside or from a neighbor’s house
“Magic Tom” also reminded students to create and practice a fire plan and choose a meeting place for their family in case of a fire at home.
“It’s a good idea whenever you have a fire drill at school, go home and have a fire drill with your family,” he advised.
Local fire departments sponsor the annual visit. Each student got a Fire Fighter Phil book to take home, filled with activities and fire prevention tips. National Fire Prevention Week is October 8th through the 14th.
