Celebrating birthday of ‘Star Spangled Banner’

Submitted story

In what has become a beloved Laker tradition, Indian Lake Elementary students celebrated the 203rd anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner with a campus concert. The Indian Lake Marching Lakers played the national anthem for the entire elementary student body at the football stadium. Students and staff stood with hands on hearts and sang. Then the students cheered as the band broke into the Laker Fight Song and several other tunes from their pre-game and half-time shows.

Students have been learning the history, vocabulary and lyrics of the song in music class since the start of school. On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key penned the lyrics during the Battle of Baltimore at Fort McHenry. It was later set to music as the Star Spangled Banner.
