BOSS Summer Run draws more than 180 participants

The 40th annual BOSS Summer Run 5K and 1 Mile Elementary Fun Run took place Aug. 19 at Lions Park in West Liberty. The race was founded in 1977 by former West Liberty-Salem cross country coach and Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Famer Ken Lehman. Over 180 runners participated in this year’s event, one of the longest standing road races in Ohio.

The overall winner of the 5K race was former Olympic trial marathoner Thomas Lentz of Cincinnati in a course record time of 16:39.3. Former West Liberty-Salem runner, Aaron Scott finished second in 16:40.4, and Logan Brown of Springfield rounded out the top three in 16:49.1.

West Liberty-Salem freshman Katelyn Stapleton took top honors in the women’s 5K in 19:41.7, followed by teammate Grace Adams in second place 20:02.5, and WL-S 8th grader Megan Adams in 3rd place in 20:09.4.

“Our men’s race was extremely competitive this year, with the top three finishers running in the 16’s,” stated race manager and West Liberty-Salem girls cross country coach Ann Vogel. “We were excited to welcome back former Olympic trials marathoner, Thomas Lentz to the race. We were also thrilled to have some of the top runners in the state from Springfield Shawnee and Springfield Northeastern join us to kick off the high school cross country season.”

Owen Hardwick was the 1st place male finisher in the mile fun run with a 7:18.3. Elliott Butler won girls mile fun run with a time of 7:22.3.

The BOSS Run was sponsored by Reliant Mechanical, Inc. and Big Orange Shoe Shop. All proceeds of the race benefit the WLS cross country programs.
