Indian Lake Elementary students got a surprise visit from a veteran ahead of Memorial Day.

Fourth grade teacher Christi Warnecke invited her father, Bob Whitaker, to speak to third and fourth graders. Whitaker is a Vietnam veteran who recently took part in an Honor Flight to visit memorials in Washington, D.C. Many ILES 3rd and 4th grade students, including his 3rd grade granddaughter, Cambrie, wrote him letters of thanks that he received while on his flight.

Whitaker told the students he was drafted two weeks after getting married. He showed them the three Purple Hearts that he was given after he was wounded three times in 24 hours while on active duty and he explained to them how important it is to honor veterans and understand their service.
